In general, the images that a computer produces can be split into two types: vector drawings and bitmaps. Vectors are a collection of instructions such as: ‘Draw a square in the bottom right, fill it blue, make it 78 units tall’. MP3 is a near-CD quality file format for sound files, and is very popular for music on the web.
It’s becoming more popular as people use it to swap music online because of its powerful compression.
